Alternator and battery question?

Just bought a 1997 Maxum 23SC with a 5.7 merc. There are three batteries on the boat with one single power 50amp. alternator. Two of the batteries are in<br />parallel for an inverter and stereo amp. and one for starting. It is wired with one orange wire coming from the alternator to the starting battery and another black wire coming from the alternator to one of the batteries in parallel and the batteries in parallel have a negative wire going to the starting battery. The starting battery has a ground to the engine block. <br />The question is are the batteries in parallel isolated from the starting battery or when the engine is off can the batteries in parallel dump back through the alternator into the starting<br />battery or the starting into the batteries in parallel.

Forgot to add if so should I add a isolator between the alternator and the batteries in parallel?

If I understand, then all three negitive wires are tied together and also have wire to the engine block.<br /><br />Starting positive has a red to the starter solenoid and a orange to the alternator output post.<br /><br />Two batteries you call parallel have the positive post tied together and one has a black wire that run to the same alternator output post as the starting battery orange wire.<br /><br />If this is correct then all 3 batteries are wired in parallel and you batteries are only as good as the weakest battery.<br /><br />One way you could test this is with the motor off take sll three positive batteries cables off. Lay them on a block of wood or carboard so they will not short out. Now with a meter connect the ground (black wire of meter)to the engine block or one of the negitive battery posts. Connect the red meter wire to one of the posts of the parallel batteries. Meter should read zero volts. Now connect the positive post of the starting battery and check the meter. If it now reads 12 volts then all three batteries are in parallel.<br /><br />If you do not have a meter then you could do the same thing by turning on the radio. If the radio plays when you connect the starting battery postive post then they are all in parallel.<br /><br />I would start by at least changing the black wire from your alternator to your parallel batteries postive post to a RED wire.<br /><br />Wired that way any device left on will run down all 3 batteries. A dead cell in any battery will also discharge the other two.<br /><br />I would install a battery isolator and isolate all three batteries.

Thanks for the reply. you have everything correct accept the black wire that runs to the alternator from the batteries in parallel is bolted on a different stud on the alternator than the orange wire. My question is can the batteries in parallel run back through the black wire then through the alternator to the orange and back to the stating battery or will the alternator act as a isolator and separate the two post. I need to keep two batteries in parallel to give me 210amp from two 105amp batteries because I need the extra amps to run a microwave and tv. Will it work if I put a isolator between the black wire and the batteries in parallel if the alternator does not isolate.

1553 – the black and orange wires should be on the alternator in different locations. One is pos (+) and the other neg (-). If the orange alt is wired to the starting battery and the black alt is wired to the house bank (the two deep cycle batteries in parallel) it is a pretty good guess all three batteries are wired in parallel. 1553<br />There are alternators designed to charge two battery banks and they have seperate output post. If that is what you have then you should be fine. This type alternator is more expensive but the two post are isolated from each other. If that black wire is a postive voltage I would still change it to a red wire.<br /><br />Like I said before Disconnect your two house parallel battery postive post and make sure they do not short to ground. Turn on something connect to your house batteries. If it turn on then your stating battery and house batteries are not isolated. If it does not turn on then they are isolated.
