I have a Cherry 1986 Mercrusier 470 (170hp) in a FourWinns 170 Horizon, the water cooled voltage regulator is no longer working thus no charging. My question.... has anyone bought the I boats or Ebay Alternator Conversion Kit? I am a former ASE Certified auto mechanic so installation not a problem, just worried about quality and clearance issues.... anyone with recommendations or pointers?
Thanks .....Old Dog

I used the Breezeworks low mount with no power steering. Great kit, great fit.

It would help if you posted links to the ones you are comparing. Then people don't have to search and wonder if they found the same ones you did.

His last few words were asking for recommendations and pointers. He mentions two other sources but not Breezeworks. This is my only experience and therefor my only recommendation. Just trying to help the guy based on my experience..

I compared Breezeworks lo-mount to the Hun-Finn Hi mount.
My motorbox clearance was extremely tight and after looking at both kits;
I decided that clearance would be too close on both.
I have power steering; you didn't say what your setup was.
I found a kit at amarket.com that was priced comparably to the Hun Finn;
It came with a machined pulley and 1 wire alt. with a really well made cast bracket.
It was the most "compact" fit I had seen yet.
Model was a Wagner DC-60.
Amarket had the best price I could find.
I bought the kit; and removed the crankshaft pulley from the boat.
I brought the 2 pulleys to a machine shop and for 40 dollars had the alternator pulley centered, mounted and pinned to the original.
The kit is straightforward and the Wagner people were excellent to help answer questions.
I am happy with it so far.

I have the same setup - 470 in an '86 170 Horizon. I used the Hunn-Finn high mount with 3-wire alternator. Went in easily and works very well.

BUT I also had to make a new motor cover for other reasons and tailored it to fit over the alternator. Can't be sure yours would clear it.

breezeworks.net has both high & low mount kits. Don't know how a high mount fits in your dog house?
