I'm having some trouble finding an alternator for my engine, because I can't find my serial number; and i'm not sure the Alternator on the engine is the appropriate one. Here is what I know about the engine.
1987 Mercruiser 260
350ci.
staggerd bolt pattern for the starter.
The only number I could find above my starter was,
10243888D I couldn't match this up with a serial number so I'm not sure what it is, but it's on the block itself above the starter.

Someone told me there are 4 different Alternators for this year. I can't understand what the big difference would be. Can someone help me with what my options are at this point?

Re: Alternator Help

Two different Manufactures, with two different Amp. ratings....
Go with the Manufacturer who built yours, with the highest amp. rating,+ you'll be Happy.....

Re: Alternator Help

Ok, so If I choose a Delco what is the difference with a 1 wire vs a 3 wire? I would rather have 1 wire as far as keeping things tidy. Is there a functional Difference?
-Gerry

Re: Alternator Help

1 wire has internal voltage regulator... 3 wire has external voltage regulator...

if you have a 3 wire now, get a new 3 wire, or you will need to re-wire your system to bypass your external regulator.
