Alternator Kit

I'd like to add an alternator to my 1988 Johnson 30 hp electric start. Is there an aftermarket kit for this? I'm having trouble finding anything. I find it odd that my parts manual doesn't reference an alternator. How is the starting battery supposed to recharge without one?

My old '87 30hp had the charger built in under the flywheel. Are you sure you don't have one already? To test it check the battery voltage, running and not running. When running my voltage was up around 16v.

Its called a rectifier, and you should have one, unless someones took it off.

Just look up rectifier on the model of your motor.

Thanks guys,

Don't I feel like a dummy. My manual does show a rectifier. I didn't realise that's what it was for. This motor is a little newer than I'm used to.
