Have a 140 mercruiser with a 3 wire alternator. Was working fine (14v) output. Disconnected all wires to remove alternator to access other work on motor. Reinstalled alternator and now only get 11.5 volts on voltmeter. It is charging, but not at former output.

I know you've done it but recheck those connections, the ALT is not working. One of the small wires goes to the purple 12V key ignition circuit. The other small wire is Red/Purple which comes from the starter and passes thru the 50 amp breaker. Also note that you might have a 90 amp fuse on the starter which the goes to the ALT. The pic below is not your motor, just noting where the fuse is

You were right that the alt wasn't working. Traced wires and found broken connector. Repaired and now works fine. Thanks, Kurt
