Alternator Rebuild?

How possible is it to rebuild an alternator for an OMC Cobra 5.0? Or is it better just to replace it? Will an auto parts store carry this type of alternator? The alternator is a Presto 83m2004kb. The batter voltage is 12.5 Volts when the engine is running. 12 volts when it isn't. Thanks for any tips.

You may not use an Automotive alternator in a boat. It has to be a Marine Alt. that is Coast Guard approved. It is sealed and will not throw a spark that could ignite fumes. Never use Automotive parts on a boat!

Just take it to your local starter/alternator repair shop. They can do a professional job at way less than the cost of a new one.

Don S. is right just make sure they know it is a marine application. The inner working such as brushes and bearings are identical. If they don't think there is a difference in the applications find another shop. A shop that has worked on both knows how to service it right.

What about starters? is there a difference between a marine starter and an auto starter?

Absolutely, they are spark protected so you don't blow up your boat if you have a fuel leak you didn't notice.

Other things that are marine rated, distributors, carbs, fuel pumps, fuel lines, trim pump motors, blowers, wiring methods and types etc.

Bring it to a rebuild shop. Your voltage output should be just over 14v, just above idle. At 12.5v, it's doing nothing.

took my starter and alternator to a rebuild shop that rebuilds marine parts. Hopefully i am good now. Thanks guys.
