This question regards a 1987 Four Winns with a 4.3 OMC, Cobra outdrive.....The original alternator has locked up and needs replacement or rebuilding. Can a newer one-wire, marine-grade alternator be used as a replacement? I know the orange wire would get connected to the alternator, but where would the 2 unused purple wires get terminated? One of these wires is the resistor wire.

will work fine, simply cap off the unused terminal rings with heat shrink and wire tie out of the way.
orange is alt power out,red is battery sense and purple was altenator exite.
the one wire style is self exciting with an internal regulator.

Thanks Rodbolt. Can't get much simpler than that.

If I install a 1-wire alternator, do I need to change the "external resistor" coil also?

The alternator replacement worked great and easy, without a hitch. Tks again.
