I have an older Chrysler lm318 1968 model. Recently the alternator is melting the main wire going to the back of it. This wire goes from the main pole of the alt. to the back of the amp guage. It is probably 10 guage wire, and has previously been fine, I have checked all connections, and terminals for corrosion and tightness all checks fine. What is happening????   Thanks for your help! Thad

Any blown fuses? Does the amp guage work and what is it reading?

Melting = short or excessive current.

Wait a second. This is the main output of the alternator and it has a 10 guage wire? But let's get back to that later.

Dunarana is right - wire melting is excessive current for some reason.

If you disconnect the wire from the alternator do you read 12 volts? It should be connected to the battery so you should read battery voltage.

What voltage do you read? Is it 12.6 volts? If it is a couple of volts lower you could have a shorted cell. This would cause the alternator to try to put out a lot of current to charge it.

What is the amp guage reading?

The more information you give the better help we can give. Note everything then post it.

Coming back to the wire, 10 guage sounds just too light for this. I don't know the size of your alternator, but mine is 50 amps. A 10 guage wire will only carry about 30 amps safely. I would guess that the wire should be 6 ga. instead.

Of course, if this is a new condition the wire size is not your immediat problem. You need to ask the most important question you can ask - WHAT CHANGED?

i would make sure that the boat didnt vibrate a hole in the wire somewhere might be a very small chaffing but its just big enough to let the voltage leak not a direct short- never know

or maybe the reg is shot and holding the current flow wide open
