I have an older Chrysler lm318 1968 model. Recently the alternator is melting the main wire going to the back of it. This wire goes from the main pole of the alt. to the back of the amp guage. It is probably 10 guage wire, and has previously been fine, I have checked all connections, and terminals for corrosion and tightness all checks fine. What is happening????   Thanks for your help! Thad

What does the ammeter read while this is going on?

This might help point towards the location of the problem.

Later,
johnbo

Have you connected anything that may be consuming a lot of power lately?
Either way, take that alternator off and get it checked, do not take any chances with the electrics in your boat. Faulty electrics + boat = BIG BANG!
