Alternator Test Help Needed

Hi all.

We have a cabin cruiser with twin merc L4's. Both have a stator for charging. Our anchorage battery (the other is for starting only) is a deep cycle battery. By morning with the fridge and everything else, the battery is 'low' but not dead.

We have an inverter that runs our electric stove. In the morning however, there is not enough power to run the inverter without charging it for a while - and takes quite a while.

I'd like to be able to have an additional alternator specifically for charging the anchor battery and 'hopefully' give enough juice to run the inverter before waiting a couple hours for the battery to recharge.

I have a marine alternator with integral regulator that I can use but is used and needs to be tested. Before I order the adapter to install it on the motor, and hooking everything up, I'd like to test it.

I can spin the regulator up to around 500 rpm (approx) with my drill and hope that I can test on the bench. With a small 12v battery connected, I can't see any variance to suggest the alternator is working.

Can anyone suggest a quick bench test for this alternator?

FYI, there are only 2 connections, one is labeled "BAT". I believe it's a Delcotron based on the pic in my merc manual.

Thanks.

Take it to your local auto zone or other parts store & they'll test it for free. I don't think most alternators will even put out at only 500 RPM's

And need to realize that because of the pulley sizes, an alternator is spinning far faster than the engine RPM.
