My engine starts up but I've got to let the starter grind away for about 30 seconds before my motor will turn over. What does this mean? I've got here timed pretty close, she's advanced a little.

Once she's started however she doesn't want to run very well under 10,000 rpm. This troubles me.

Also my alternator is only putting out 13.4v is this normal? Is there a correlation to the hard start?

Thanks for the help.

Re: Alternator Voltage and Starter Question.

I can see 3 Issues,........ 2 of which Might be related.......

I Doubt you're seeing 10,000rpms,......
Not idling under 1000rpms tells me the Carb's Low Speed Circuit is Plugged,+ Not working,.....
This Could be related to the Hard Starts.......

And,..... A Close Enough Tune-Up,..... Isn't much of a Tune-Up.........

13.6 Volts is a Normal Alt. Output........

Re: Alternator Voltage and Starter Question.

Hi bondo,

You are absolutely right, my rpm's are nowhere near 10k. I don't know what I was thinking? It's idling at 2000. I was reading my manual and it states that I need to be at 27 degrees while running at 2000rpm. That's where I'm at now. I unfortunately can't tweak the carb because my motor wont stay cool long enough for the tune. I've got another post out discussing my thermostat issue.

I just rebuilt my carb last week and all is clear. Is there something I might have missed? I thought I was pretty thorough. The only questionable thing about my rebuild was one of the floats. I accidentally knocked the float off of it's arm, but I was able to reinstall the float. What should I look for?

One more thing, is my 13.4V alternator output a bad thing or is that ok?

Re: Alternator Voltage and Starter Question.

After adjusting the gap of my plugs to spec and timing the engine to spec, I am doing great!!! My little Geneva tore it up on the water tonight! It took her about 5-10 seconds to spark up, but once she did she was a DREAM!

I've never heard her purr so nicely! 37 years old and she is still rockin'!

Thanks for all of your help!!!
