Merc 140hp I4 1984, received an AC Delco remanufactured alternator for free from a buddy that works for Napa. I understand this is not the correct application for this alternator as it is manufactured for a vehicle rather than marine, but it does mount up right. Question on wiring is I have the Red for power, Black for Ground..... then one white and one red coming off alternator. The two existing that were cut are purple and black I believe. Guessing one is ign. Just asking where white and red wires would go. This is only a temporary application until I can afford to either reman the Mando or purchase a new one. Would just like to have one on for the mass amount of work I have ahead of me before it goes in the water, any help and I suppose some criticism is welcome

Re: Alternator wiring

Does the word "KABOOM" mean anything to you? That alternator is not spark protected and can ignite gas fumes with devastating results. You think you can't afford the proper alternator, think about the physical injury you might inflict on a passenger. Then guess what happens.

Re: Alternator wiring

Thank you for the input I was not aware of that. Can anyone provide any decent replacement models/manufacturers (other than Mando)? They are quoting astronomical rebuild prices for it and they said it was a poor design to begin with??

Re: Alternator wiring

Go to ebay and you can find Mando alternators for a little over $100.

If you do decide to go with the automotive alternator...don't bring any passengers on the boat and don't start the boat when there are other people or boats around.

Re: Alternator wiring

I appreciate the advice. I certainly do not plan on using a non-marine alternator after hearing the effects it can have. I was not aware of this. The alternator fell in my lap so I thought I would ask some questions.
