Alternator???

Hey guys got another question for my motor 2001 25hp (J25TVLSI). Had it for over a month and been using it 2-4 times a week. Been using it to fish and to ride a lot. Each time out I crank it many times especially if fishing I might crank it 20+ times. So after over a month I still havent charged the battery nothing else on the batter except the motor. Still does fine and doesnt seem like the battery is dying or struggling when cranking. So I hooked up a new battery charger and the gauge on the charger didnt read anything....as if the battery was fully charged...?? Is it possible that the motor is keeping the battery fully charged? Does this motor have a alternator? Thanks for any help

Re: Alternator???

Yep it should do.
Have a look for a regulator/rectifier on it, if you have a charging system on it it will have this. Google the image for this part if you dont know what one looks like
581778 — RECTIFIER

If someones put a aftermarket starter on it it might not have a charger for it.
Its only rideon mowers that ive come across that often have electric starters but no charging for the battery

Re: Alternator???

Ps its not an alternator as such. The flywheel has magnets in it that spin past some coils under the flywheel. This puts some AC current down the line to the regulator/rectiifer. THe reg/rectifier converts that to dc to charge the battery and to limit the voltage around 14v so you dont blow up the batterty

Awesome. And this would keep the batter fully charged? What if other electronics were hooked up to the battery, still keep it charged? Thanks for the help.

Yep it will keep it fully charged. Depends what you hook up to it.
If you hook up anything that drains a lot of juice then it will struggle to keep it charged but fishfinders and everything like that should be ok. Big speakers for example, probably not

Re: Alternator???

According to your model number, you have a rectifier and stator, so you have a charging system on your engine.

These types of charging system have been around for quite awhile (older ones did NOT have decent voltage regulation). I'm not certain what they have done in the past 10-15 years or so, but these systems are MUCH better than the older ones.

I'm pretty certain that Evinrude uses this type of system on ALL of their ETEC outboards. Other manufacturers use alternators with built in regulators very similar to what is in your car. I can't say which is "better" over all, but the Evinrude system is more compact and will run without a battery attached !

Re: Alternator???

If you run it without the battery hooked up, you'll blow the rectifier/regulator.

Re: Alternator???

Wrong.-------Many of the OMC motors with the battery charging system can be run without the battery installed.----Heck the wiring harness even came with a cover on the positive lead so that it could not touch the negative lead when there was no battery !!!!

Re: Alternator???

What he meant was don't unhook the battery while running and hook it back up. That will blow the rectifier.

Racer, what motors ?????? I'll bet that they weren't any big ones.
