altternator question 1990 225 evinrude

i am wondering why my alternator reads 500 rmp when engine is off, when i turn ignition on it goes to 0. is this normal? also can any one tell me how many poles this alternator would have so i can set 5 or 6 on the seltecor on the back. THANK YOU FOR READING

6p on back of tach (pretty sure)

your gauges may float when ignition is off, seems strange it always jumps to 500 amps. seems to zero itself in the ignition on position so i wouldn't worry about it.

Set your tach to 6 position meaning 12 poles. It is normal for some tachs to do what yours is doing.
