I have a 35 johnson and chew up alot of props by fishing shallow water and hitting stumps and sometimes rocks. Would a ss prop be a good thing or would i be more likely to tear out the lower unit?

If I was chewing up props like you do , I would by a case of plastic ones.

To answer your question, you can damage your lower unit easier with a stailess than an aluminum. When you hit something stainless transfers the shock much harder than aluminum. Stick with aluminum or plastic. (composit).

The rubber hub in the prop is there to absorb the shock. The gears wont be in any more danger with one prop than the other.

Good luck!

One More Cast,

I have something very similar (Mac's River Runner) on a 20' Starcraft Pontoon and a Merc. 75.

It does what it is supposed to do, protect the prop. Plus, it hasn't hurt performance either. If you can put pontoon and performance in the same sentence. ;)

Like dhadley says, the hub protects your gearcase. A SS prop is way better for your application. It can still get dinged but won't get trashed like aluminum does. I only know one person who used a plastic prop and he kept breaking the replaceable blades. He didn't keep it long.
