Ok so I have been puttering on this old alumacraft FD and the trailer on and off for 2 years. Finaly got it on the lake today and their is a slight leak comming from the seam toward the bow. My thought is just to use some 4200 and reseal the seam, could i do that and then cover it with golvit? And how long does the gloveit last? How hard is it to remove if you ever needed too?

Re: alumacraft FD

You need to paint it to protect it from UV. Gluvit doesn't like UV. If it's under a floor then you don't have to paint it. If your boat has no floor...then you gotta paint it.

Ok would this idea work. Seal the seams on the outside of the boat with 5200 and gluvit on the inside?

Re: alumacraft FD

Get off as much paint as possible ......it does not have to be 100% but you should strive for it.

Yes rustoleum will cover gluvit.

Bob you rock! Thanks for your help! After spending 4 hours last night just to sand all the paint of the front 2 feet of the boat I think I am going to try a stripper to hit the big areas and then just use the wire brush on the other parts.

has anyone ever used the rustolium aluminum primer on the inside of their hull? how did it work? any reason why I should not do this?

Re: alumacraft FD

If it's bare aluminum it will need to be primed first with self etching primer. I was able to find Duplicolor's etching primer at Pep Boys for a reasonable price. You only need a light dusting of the stuff and it can be top coated quickly.

Re: alumacraft FD

I was guessing because it says it is an aluminum primer that it would do that, am i mistaken?

I think I'd put more faith in the self etching stuff. But hey, I don't think they could call it aluminum primer if it doesn't stick to aluminum!

Re: alumacraft FD

I emailed the good people at rustolium to find out if my project would be better suited to their self etching primmer or the aluminum primer!
