Hi everyone. Just was wondering about the quality of 5054 aluminum? Is this marine grade and if so will it hold up to salt water well? Also, how thick is 0.118 gauge aluminum? Would this stand up well in salt water under normal conditions? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the 5000 series is considered marine

5052 is easier to form, however slightly less strong
5083 and 5086 is hull plating

aluminum is measured in thickness, so 0.118 is 0.118" or just under 11 gauge or 1/8"

what are you intending to use the aluminum for? building a boat?

if you are attempting to patch a transom, fix the wood

I'm actually considering buying a welded boat that is made from 5054 aluminum with 0.118 thickness. I just wanted to see how this thickness would hold up in possible choppy conditions on the ocean and if 5054 will hold up in salt water.

without knowing the hull construction, etc. cant answer how it would hold up. the material is fine

however if this is in regards to your chinesium boat in your other thread, I would steer clear of anything made in china

I was concerned about the Chinese produced boat as well but these do appear to be well made which is unusual for Chinese made products. Just trying to get suggestions and as much info as I can to make an informed decision. I have my eye on other brands of boats as well.
