The Gregor brand has a good reputation, along with the others mentioned. You're right some of them are down right $$$$$$$. Having seen some of them, you get what you pay for though.

What do you want to use it for?

There are plenty of Alum. boats out there and most will live in salt, if cared for.

Many are from the Midwest, so finding them, out here, is a little slim. But, they're out there.

Ever been on the water in a aluminum boat, or a wooden sailboat ?

Hot, hot, hot.

Give me fiberglass any day. The miracle material.

You have never been on an Alumaweld boat or other decent aluminum boat. Lund and Starcraft are two other brands I have had.I have had both fiberglas and aluminum boats. I live in Florida, and boat all year. My aluminum boat does not ever get hot in any weather while I am on the water. That is an old wives tale. It may get hot sitting on the trailer, but so does my truck. Both aluminum and fiberglas have their good and bad points.

Then by all means buy the aluminum boat.

May you enjoy it.

But not to insult you, will it last as long as a fiberglass boat in salt water ?

And sir: you have no idea what sorta boats i have been on.

Good luck in all your endeavors !

For what it is worth, here in the PacNW, most "premium" boats in the 14-25 foot range seem to be aluminum. For the most part, cheaper stuff is 'glass. I'm not sure, but it could have something to do with both weight and toughness. Glass boats around here seem to have a greater than average habit of developing holes below the water line ;)

Re: aluminum ocean boats

Aluminum boats around this part of the Pacific Northwest are regarded by the serious boater as the way to go. Fibreglas doesn't a chance against aluminum for heavy duty/ocean factor. They got their start being used for beachcombing/logging based activities that would have killed a fibreglas boat.
However, very expensive to build and to buy. Completely different labour intensive process than making a fibreglas boat and aluminum is not cheap these days. That said, if you do hit something, even at high speed you probably just bounce off. A buddy of mine accidentally powered his 20-22' jet boat right up onto the shore by mistake with three of us in it. We were doing about 25-30mph when we hit the beach...and kept going right up into the woods. Scared the crap out of us, good story afterward but not during. We rode several logs on our way up into the woods.:eek:
Regardless, the boat was simply hauled back down into the water...cleaned the jet intake and ba-da-bing off we went. If that was one of the average 'offshore' fibreglas boats....it would still be there, or at least parts of it.;)
We got off lucky.....but that aluminum hulled boat....bullet proof that day.
If you go looking to buy one, get ready to ante' up the coin tho', they ain't giving them away but they are pretty much forever boats.
