I have an 1986 Sylvan 21' offshore cuddy. Holes have appeared in the hull. After much work removing everything above deck I finaly have removed some of the foam. Water had gotten between the hull and poured foam. Oxidation is eating the hull and ribs.
With some advice the repair may be possible. Maybe not. Several questions if someone would be so kind as to offer some advise. Perhaps you have seen this before?
1. Is there a product that will remove/neutralize the oxidation?
2. If the damage is not too extensive ( have not removed all foam yet) and the oxidation is removed and all holes patched is there a paint or sealer that will prevent future oxidation? Water will probably find its way back in.

If you have experienced this on a foam filled hull, any advice on repairs would be appreciated. The boat and motor are in excellet condition otherwise.

Thanks,

Mr. Fitz operater of Miss Fitz

Re: Aluminum Oxidation

gluvit seems to have quite a following on here, two part epoxy sealer, tough as nails and flexes with your hull (!)

might be just the ticket!

Re: Aluminum Oxidation

Oxidation? or electrolisis? It could be caused by a voltage leak or copperbased weed killer used in inland lakes.

Re: Aluminum Oxidation

Mr Fitz

I had some pitting on my 20" Lund last year. Found this Al. Boat Repair Forum. Some good info for you. Do you use it in salt? Make sure you keep up with the zincs. I drilled my transom, mounted a couple of studs, and put a hefty zinc on after that.

Capt'n Mike
