I am replacing the transom on my 1964 12' aluminum Starcraft and the rear handles have a lot of white powder on them. I have softly wire brushed them but their textured surface doesn't lend itself to this type of cleaning. Does anyone know of another way to clean these?

Re: Aluminum Oxide

Try washing it with vinegar and then rinsing it real good. Polish it back up with a fine scratch pad, 3m makes them.

Re: Aluminum Oxide

Are they chrome plated? if so they will be pitted, and never go back to new condition, but the next best solution is to take them off and use a buffer with very fine rouge and go lightly, using the edge of the wheel, remember if pitted you only looking to remove the corrosion and give it a clean smooth serface, then wax it good and your done. You can go from looking good to aww-crap real fast so go slow. Use a heavy past wax, as you want more than just a polymer like what most car waxes are today. Old school wood wax works good if you have any.
