Aluminum vs. Stainless

I have a 1995 Stingray 609zp with a 4.3liter merc. I only have one prop so I'm thinking of buying a stainless and run that and keep the aluminum as a spare. I've heard that if you hit something with a stainless you're way more likely to damage your outdrive. Is this true? Is there any way to minimize this risk? How much more power/speed with stainless give? Is the increased performance worth it for stainless?? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Aluminum vs. Stainless

Generally speaking the Stainless is more efficient to the point that it may require dropping in pitch to keep the rpm where you want it.Before buying give us the details on your present prop, rpm and speed. Also how you generally use your boat.
Without question the stainless will transmit more impact to the drivetrain.
I've also heard that certain sst props cause drive train rattle.
I have heard of folks having problems with damage from stumps and soft bottom on aluminum props changing to stainless and and holding up better.

Re: Aluminum vs. Stainless

Just bought the boat so I haven't run it yet. Should be able to get out this weekend though and will post back. As for the size and pitch, i've gotta remove the nut holding it on to see the size. I generally use the boat for skiing, cruising on lakes and rivers.
