This is after 20 minutes of running on the muffs. Is this normal
The boat is new to me so I don't have any oil consumption history yet.

Re: Am I Burning Too Much Oil?

Probably just from the choke being on.

Howdy,

Is "what" normal?

Your picture shows what appears a to be little soot on the back. That is usually caused by the choke being closed and the engine running a little "rich"

Oil consumption is exactly that. Consumption. You have to run it several hours and measure the oil loss by checking it (with the engine "level")

A little soot on the back after a 20 min run tells very little.......Run the engine again and after 20 min or so, note whether the chock plate is still closed.....(or note when it does actually open fully.)

Regards,

Rick

Thanks for the replies.

Would you expect an EFI engine to be running rich after 15 minutes of running with the temp at 160 degrees?

Probably not unless the ECM is still getting a "cold" signal from the it's temp sender. I'll also add that you'll probably have to put a scan tool on it to be sure.

I haven't played with one of those.....take a look at the Mercury service manual and I'll bet there's a troubleshooting section that addresses rich running after start.....

Does that mean you have an EFI engine, or just curious? What is your engine serial number. That would help in determining exactly what your problem is.
