Am I charging? Mixed results with swapped Regulator

Got a 1984 PHead on '93 Lower...Had an issue with Tach Jumping, and weak batterys..originally Volt meter and fishfinder would show up to 16v when Tach was jumping, and 12.5v solid when tach sat short periods at Zero--this was on the water and only above 3k rpm.

So, did my research.....Found I had a 10am Stator, with a 35 amp water cooled Regulator(already knew this but verified). Sounded Like a bad regulator.

I swapped the regulator last night, easy enough. Now when I start off with a fresh charged battery (12.7v)...and run on muffs....My meter and fishfinder start off at 12.5 or so, then after 30 seconds--go up to 13.4-13.5....It will vary a bit with RPM but not much.

Then, when I turn off motor, the readings are still 13.3v or so!.....Is this just residual from the charging process, since it was a fresh battery originally reading 12.7? If I let that battery sit, will it bleed down back to original 12.7.

The Tach is steady at least in the driveway--Before it would bounce on the water only at 3k rpm and higher.

Does this sound Like I'm actually charging? With the old regulator, I thought I could get to 14.5 or a bit higher.

Just not 100% sure this is enough actually charging properly.

Oh, The swap was to a 10am Regulator to match the stator. Maybe I'm just used to seeing overcharging. Just trying to verify I'm charging propery.

Sounds like it is charging. Normal results. A regulated charging system will probably let the charging system run up to about 13.5 volts. (or so) Some of the old unregulated charging systems would get up to 16+ charging volts. Sound like yours is "regulated"

Thanks alot EMD-for your thoughts....Yes this is the regulated water cooled....I agree now after testing more last night. I now see increasing AC directly off the stator Yellow wires..Up to about 30vac or so as Rpm's increase.

And with the battery sitting overnight, and reading 12.7 (fresh), it will go up toward 13.-13.8 with some Rpm...Agreed, this looks ok.

I'll see what an In-water test does under load. See if I remain charging and tach is steady.

Appreciate the reply
