Hello all, I recently got ahold of a 1988 Johnson 15 horse to use on my fishing rig. I promptly mixed up a batch of fuel at 50:1 but I used Stihl two stroke oil, its a high quality oil, but maybe not for outboard engines, do you think I might damage the engine using it?? I used up about half a tank, thanks for any info.

Re: Am I "doomed"???

Hi & welcome.

I don't have my Karma sensing glasses on, so you may well still be doomed... but I don't think you did any damage running a few gallons of that gas oil mix through it. Having said that, I'd dump it into another can and save it for the saw (remember to add more oil if you saw calls for a ratio with more oil than 50:1)

The Stihl two stroke oil is for 2 cycle engines, but it intended is for air cooled ones, not water cooled motors like OB's (which run much cooler). You should use an outboard oil with TC-W3 certification.

In the old days, they used 30 weight motor oil mixed in the gas (that's what the manual in my 1970 25 hp calls for)...

good luck on continued doom avoidance. :)

Brent

We're all doomed, as history proves. But, as BF said, your outboard isn't doomed. It'll be just fine. I'd switch to TCW-3 outboard oil in the future, though.
