Am I Getting Hosed?

Took my '89 OMC Cobra drive to a stern drive guy. I told him that it was leaking oil out of the prop shaft and repeatedly emphasized that I was just looking to get the drive functioning so that I could sell my boat. He tore it down and told me that he dropped some part down into the drive and needed two hours to get it out and that I had a bent prop shaft. I asked him to replace the prop shaft only using a used part which he had and of course replace the seals. He calls me today to say he ate a lot of tiime and did a lot of stuff for which I won't be charged, and it will all only cost me $750. I checked on ebay and the drive is barely even worth that. What is my '89 boat worth though without a freegin drive? Am I getting hosed?

You'll be hard pressed to find a complete Cobra for $750 that does not require some attention.

Did you hit someting that you didn't tell us about in your earlier posts?? Prop shafts don't just bend on their own. Prop shaft seals go bad all the time.

Re: Am I Getting Hosed?

I'm certain that I did NOT hit anything. In fact, I drove the boat without incident right up to the last day of my season last year when I discovered water in the cylinders. He says with the shaft bent so severly, I would have felt a huge vibration, but I didn't. Either way, assuming it was bent, it sounds like the drive is worth the $750. Thanks kagee.

Ask to see ALL of the old parts, tell him you want them in a box. If they are already in a heap out back....?

I don't think $750 is outragous to have your drive re-sealed and prop shaft replaced. I paid $450 to have my alpha 1 drive re-sealed, and it only had 69 hours on it.
