80% of the cost is the new VRO pump, if they had to trouble shoot at x$/hour, then labor to do the job @ shop rate.. it doesn't seem out of line

Don't know what their shop rate is but it may be not to far out of line. The VRO pumps are not cheap. Go to Shop.Evinrude.com and look up the price of the pump.

Re: am i getting robbed

Cokeman,
I had VRO pump replaced last year. Cost for the part was $437, and mech. charged 2 hrs. @ $95 / hr. After all was said and done, the bill was about $700.
Yes, you can probably change out the pump yourself, but what recourse would you have if the replacement goes wrong? I'd rather be happy with the instant fix once the part gets installed correctly. Mine was leaking fuel into a cylinder, and wouldn't idle (like when you are leaving or coming into the dock). It ran good above idle, but what a pain in the butt to get to the dock without scratching the heck out of the gel coat. Your choice ultimately to do it yourself or not, but I would have the knowledgeable mechanic do itfor peace of mind later. Good luck.

If you elect to do it yourself, you have to follow the procedures exactly to keep from ruining your motor. First you need to had oil to your gas tank for a 50:1 ratio and get it to the motor, then you can start replacing the pump. You have to bleed and prime the oil system, then test the NO OIL alarm system then you have to test the pump's priming action making sure the oil alarm turns off, you have to do a flow test to make sure the oil delivery is correct, and you have to run the engine on 50:1 until determining that oil is being used from the tank.

OMS is awfully convenient. I have replaced mine. A couple of hours and a little light reading and it's in and working perfectly.

I'd give it two wrenches in the difficulty scale.

Premixing sucks! Unless you have fuel flow meters
