I have been looking at this used boat for about a month sitting in the front yard of this guys house. It is an 19' Ranger. W/ tandam axle trailer. 200hp Evenrude tilt, trim,Jackplate, two fish finders, carpet looks great(black) two seats with post. The only thing about this boat is it is a 1988 model, same as the motor. and the whole boat looks like it has never been out of the weather? Oxidized bad. When you run your finger across the boat it leaves a chaulky film behind.
I had to stop one day for the heck of it to see how much. $2,500 bucks is what he is asking. Unreal price for this. What are some of the hidden defects I would look for if I buy it? Motor was fired for me with muffs on. It fired right up. I would love to have this boat but I just seems to good a deal? any imput would help me with my decision. I run the lakes with a 12' jon boat now with a 4 hp johnson. This would be a big step up for me.

Its a fiberglass boat. The transom looks good. It has a very big Jackplate installed on it. I have looked in all the dry storage bins and what I could see, Looks great. The complete deck feels good as I walk across it?

Suzuki40

Time for a long test ride and have a mechanic look it over. Sometimes you just have to roll the dice.

$2500 bucks.... Where is it? :D

Actually, in my opinion, I'd rather have a Ranger that was made in the 80's, opposed to the ones made today.. Better boat..

The fact that it has a 200 Merc that runs :D :D makes it worth more than 2500. Bring your checkbook, take her for a spin if your satisfied, :) go for it. Take her home , do a complete PM on the motor, get out a high speed polisher and some Maguire's fine cut cleaner, and go to town. :D :D . If the rest of the boat is as good as you say, you've just doubled your money.

Re: Am I missing something?

Suziki40...Or ya can wait and let someone else buy it and kick yourself for it. Check the main componets. Everyone here will help with the rest.

Compression, hull, transom, lower unit for water, Should about do it. Check wheel bearings before you tow it. Sounds like a nice rig with a bit of elbow grease. Anyone who is willing to look at the oxidation and say I can fix that is just a couple of questions away from dealing with any other minor issues.

Re: Am I missing something?

Sometimes you're just lucky! My buddy and I recently got a 17' fibreglass bowrider with cover, trailer, 85 hp Evinrude V4 outboard, spare prop, gas can, ski bar and rope - boat and motor are about 1978 vintage but they worked right out of the box for $2400 CDN! Sure the one you're looking at is a bit chalky but if deck and transom and good, and the motor turns over you can't go wrong! Have a great time!

Re: Am I missing something?

I jut wanted to let everyone who commented on this rig last night and today...I am now the proud owner of this big boat as of 6:00pm tonight.
I took a chance and just bought the boat for $2,200 dollars. I went strait to the lake by my house and put her in. Man do I feel like a big ocean liner out there after fishing out of a 12' waco jon boat for 3 years. I got the motor to fire right up. It idols great and revs with some authority. Everything works, doesnt seem to be taking on any water, even though I forgot to put the plug in...(woops) Now the bad news. The $400.00 dollar prop that is on it has a spun hub? what is this going to cost to fix? anyway boat pulled out up to a point till the hub starts to spin. I can tell it is going to run pretty fast. Any idea what speed im going to get out of her? Im used to 5 to 8 MPH in my jonboat? LOL!
Ya'll talked me into this...now hold my hand and lets get it moving. Thanks fella's, if you cant tell im excited as heck!!

Suzuki40

Re: Am I missing something?

Replacing the hub is no big deal, I think you can expect 60-90$ for a transplant hub.
I'd guess the boat is capable of a good 55-60MPH, properly set-up. Play with it, get used to it for awhile, and be very careful about the speed end of it. When you do get up to speed, just remember to slow down, before you trim down.
Good luck!!! :) :)

Re: Am I missing something?

Thanks walleyehed... I am so pumped up about this boat. It has an aluminum Jack plate in the back. What is this used for? I assume to raise and lower the motor? But why?

Suzuki40

Re: Am I missing something?

Congrads on the new BIG toy :p
Transom jacks are supposed to let you get your
motor farther behind the boat and raise it a
little to run in cleaner water.
I don't know if they really work or not.

I hope they do as I just moved mine back 18
inches and on a transom jack. But wont get it
back on the water until next year to find out.

from 12ft jon to a 19ft Ranger wow you take
big steps! :D
