Is there a solution to my problem that I have? Other than move that is! In my small condo, I cannot get am reception with any radio I have. All I get is a real loud scratchey noise. This is from my good system down to portable radios that I can move in anyone of my three rooms and get the same scratchey noise. The am radio station is also in the same area that I live in. I have no problem getting fm reception even without cable(don't have it). Is there an antenna for am that I can buy or make that would help me out? I must be in just the wrong spot for reception although my car will pick am up where it's parked. Is that because it is grounded? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: AM Radio Reception

Have you tried using a shielded wire to an antenna outside the window. I have seen problems with AM signals inside concrete buildings.

You can use a shielded cable similar to the antenna cable used in your car radio system. These are available at most Radio Shack or similar stores. This will eliminate any noise that is picked up from inside the building.

You could use regular wire to the antenna, but it may still pick up some noise.

AM radio is bi directional unlike FM which is omni directional. Because of this an AM radio will have better reception facing directly towards or directly away from the radio station you are trying to tune in. This becomes important if you choose to add an antenna to your house to recieve the radio transmissions.

I've always found that the best antennas are simply made from speaker wire split into a "T" in a window. It's easy to blend the wire into the window frame. The bigger the better.
