Hey guys....I have the opportunity to pick up a Mariner 20hp motor for $75.00. It is complete and I am not sure if it runs. It isn't frozen up and the lower unit seems to be good. It's not in bad shape cosmetically either. The guy says he thinks it is in the early 80's but isn't sure. The numbers I got off the transom clamp are:<br />65381171 on the left side and 1802 on the right side. Can anybody tell me what year this engine is? Are they hard to get parts for? A bear to work on? Do they run good? Basically I am just asking if I should walk away or buy it and dig in. I am a johnnyrude guy and know nothing about Mariners. Thanks in advance....

for 20 dollars why not?? you cant go wrong with that deal...anyways, if worse comes to worse and it ends up freezing up and dont want to pay for a complete rebuild of the powerhead, then just part the whole thing out...the lower unit alone will bring a good 100-200 dollars in very good used condition not to mention all of the other smaller parts on an outboard. by the way, that 20 is the same as the mercury 20 just different colors, decals and name. the 20 h.p engines are very solid and it shouldn't be too hard to get parts for either.

Thanks, Glastron... I don't know much about Mariner and I appreciate the information. It's 75.00...not 20.00. :) The guy told me that it was made for Mariner by Yamaha in certain years. It does have made in Japan on it by the serial numbers. How can I identify what year exactly it is?

The serial number doesn't seem to fit the charts. If I were to guess at it, I would say 1979 based on what I can find. If it has good compression its worth $75. Even if it doesn't run, you can part it out for more than that.

The Yamaha built Mariners are supposed to be good motors. Still many of them on the water. Maybe Rodbolt or one of the other experts will chime in.

Correction on engine numbers, guys... I went to look at it again today and the number is 653S1171 not 65381171... Sorry about that... Any ideas?
