The opening rounds are really quite entertaining, people who soooooo can not sing but are genuinely surprised and even hurt to learn that (don't these people have friends?) - I watch with my daughter, it's something we can do together, like watching "America's Next Top Model" - okay sure it's drivel.<br /><br />I was just wondering if anybody knows - do the producers or whoever have to track down and get permission and/or pay royalties to whomever owns the songs that the contestants "sing", at least if they're recognizable?

My guess would be no to that question.I wouldn't think any more than if one had to contact or pay royalties to the Crosby family for singing White Christmas on a Holiday special. However, who knows what some attorney could do to suck up some bucks for hisself and some disgruntled songwriter.

I'm not so sure songs are protected like that. Look at all the remakes of songs out there.

If he's as bad as some of those contestants, his singing is a sin!

"Happy Birthday To You" is copyrighted. If it's played on a tv show or radio, the owners get royalties. Ever notice how low-budget shows (like cartoons) make up a different, but similar song?<br /><br />A lot of Christmas songs are the same way. Rudolph the RNRD especially.<br /><br />This concludes this episode of "Copyright Laws 101"<br /><br /><br />spots

Some of the songs I heard tonight rather than paying royalties they were in danger of being sued by the composer of the song. ;)

Well, at least next week their competition begins. Bad singers tend to destroy what hearing I have left.

I feel like an idiot watching it but can't help myself because I can't wait to hear Simon's response.<br /><br />Of course they show all the worst. I'd personally rather they skipped airing this part and got straight to the competition.<br /><br />It amazes me that some of these people actually think they are talented. I even feel sorry for those who get ridiculed. Reminds me of the "Gong Show" anyone remember it?

Re: American Idol

Yes! the Gong Show! I have often referred to it as the precursor to American Idol. Remember the unknown comic?<br /><br />But for me the early rounds have more entertainment value than the actual competition. I bet you don't like the Three Stooges, am I right? Could be one of those Mars and Venus things. :D

I don't know how the law in the US stands on copyrite, but in the UK you are granted an "Entertainment Licence" by the court (for a fee of course) this licence covers you.<br />When my wife sings it is a stipulation of her contract that the vennue has such a licence.

Re: American Idol

RPJS, in the states there is the American Songwriters, Composers, Authors, and Publishers, or better known as ASCAP. Any business that makes money off music is required to pay an annual fee. Most bands and DJ's that play in establishments that pay these ASCAP fees do not have to pay unless they are doing it on their own to make money. At least that is how it was explained to me way back when I use to be in bands and DJing.
