AMF Brightwork

There are a few pieces of wood trim (brightwork) on the bow and gunwales of my 79 AMF Crestliner Muskie. The finish is totally gone, and I'd like to make it shine again and look as classy as the boat. Does anyone know what kind of wood it is? Since the boat is AMF, I'm thinking maple or heart pine.

Well, it really doesn't matter what type of wood it is. If you want to restore the original lustre and shine it will require sanding it down to bare wood, cleaning thoroughly and applying whatever type of finish you want.
Usually over maple or pine some companies used a marine grade finish ( aka timber varnish ), but not the rule. A true varnish will have the tendency to turn most of those woods amber ( depending on the product). Pine will go darker brown, maple will pretty much amber out - slightly.
Again, it is pretty much up to what product you choose as to what the outcome will be.
Do a Google search for your application and possible color variances.
You can do a lot of different things with wood and their finished look.

If it is the original wood i would bet that it is teak. If it is teak go to your local boating store and get teak cleaner and teak oil and follow the directions.

Yeah, my money's on teak, too.
I had a 1976 AMF Crestliner 15 footer and it had 5 teak strips on the bow.

I do want the trim to look good, but I was also curious (considering the age of the boat) what the wood really is. I had hoped for teak, but then the bowling alley monster crept into my head.
