Hey everyone last year I ran nothing but Amsoil Hp Marine in my old outboards and had great success with it. My outboards are all OMCs from the 50s. Is the amsoil worth the extra cost.

Personally I have never used it. If it works well and it gives you piece of mind, go ahead and use it.

Probably very good oil , but must be mixed at the ratio recommended for your motor.--------------If your motors are to use 24:1 do not run with 50:1 because it says so on the amsoil container.---------------Usually when lubrication questions are asked we get all sorts of answers and opinions.---------Some good answers and some bad answers.---------Point is that lubrication on 2 stroke engines is often not well understood !!!

Re: Amsoil in Old outboards

Often overlooked with the older motors it the fact that the oil acts as a bit of a cushion on the sleeve bearings, preventing metal on metal contact. To achieve this, there must be a certain volume of oil in the mix. Thin mix of synthetic might be great with lubrication, but the "thickness" needed to keep the metal bits in place just isn't there. Becomes less of an issue in roller bearing motors, but lean the mix at your own risk...

I still run my motors at the reccomended ratio. I run my 7.5 5.5 and 3 hp at 16:1 and everything else at 24:1. I did notice alot less smoke with amsoil even at 16:1. Plus I never foul plugs. It is just a personal preference of what oil you want I guess.

Gee, on an old engine like that, I would run the cheapest TCW-III 2 cycle oil I could find. I doubt the Amsoil provides any advantage over dino oil, but it will lighten your wallet faster....

I swear by synthetic. I use it in pretty much every motor I have(auto, truck, and outboard). But i kinda have to agree with the guys about using the regular stuff with such an old motor. However, you will see significantly less smoking/plug fouling with synthetic. And, I don't have the marbles to lean out my oil mix on my crossflows. I mix it 50-1. I know others say you can lean it out ........I dunno........is it worth the gamble?

Best to stick with the manufactures recomendation for fuel to oil mix. You really cant have too much oil. I think the problem with running a 100:1 is when your motor sits for long periods of time there is not enough oil to keep the bearings and rings lubricated.

DonS :( always said this best in oil threads: "If you don't want to follow the manufacturer's recommendation, do whatever you want." Ultimately sums up all oil threads quite nicely ;)
