An oil and gas question...

I recently purchased a 1989 Glastron with a 3.0l I/O mercruiser. The previous owner used Shell Rotella 15w-40 oil in it. Is this a good oil to use for this engine? It has about 175 hrs on it. Also, how good is Sta-Bil's enthanol treatment for this rig ? The tank looks like fiberglass to me.
Thanks.....

Re: An oil and gas question...

Howdy,

There's a multitude of oil threads asking the same question and the answers are always "I use XXXXX and have no problems"

Here's what Mercruiser says at http://www.mercurymarine.com/serviceandwarranty/mercruiserfaqs/fueloil.php#1124

What type of oil should I use? Can I use synthetic oil?

Engine Oil
To help obtain optimum engine performance and to provide maximum protection, we strongly recommend the use of the following oils listed in the order of recommendation:

  1. MerCruiser / Quicksilver Synthetic Blend, NMMA FC-W rated, 4 cycle oil.
  2. MerCruiser / Quicksilver 25W40 NMMA FC-W rated oil.
  3. A NMMA FC-W rated oil.
  4. MerCruiser / Quicksilver 4-cycle 25W40, non FC-W rated oil.
  5. A good grade straight weight detergent automotive oil per the operating chart below.
NOTE: The use of non-detergent oils, multi-viscosity oils (other than as specified), non-FC-W rated synthetic oils, low quality oils or oils that contain solid additives are specifically not recommended.
I also use xxxxx in mine and always have......

Oh, and on the STABIL.....never used it. If you let it sit for a winter, IMHO, you really don't need it.

If you really do have fiberglass tanks, you may have a problem with gas sitting in it all winter or longer, especially if it does have ethanol in the gas (and just about ALL automotive gas does now)

I would absolutely worry about that.

If there's anyway possible for you to replace your fuel tank with an aluminum or poly type tank (HDPE #2 etc).......... you should do it....

Cheers,

Re: An oil and gas question...

With most gas having a shelf life of 90 days it is very wise to store with a fuel stabilizer.

As far as oils go...The 15-40 is a little low. More like a 25-40 or even a straight 30 or 40w oil.
