another question my buddy has an old elgin. we think it is a 5.5 hp. we both think it is sweet( we are in to the old school things, it started with old cars and now here recently outboards too). we think its from the 40s to 50s. it runs good when we can get it to run. the prob we have is if it sets back too far it floods the cylinders with gas. if it sets to far forwards it leaks out the carb. so i would assume it has to do with the float. does any one know where to start or what else it might be. how do you set the float on it. thanks

Er----if you don't even know what you have how are we supposed to know how to set the float?

A model # and pics would be a good hint.

Ditto, check it over for numbers then post them. Based on your description, sounds like the float and needle seat are not doing their job...time to pull the carb and have a look.

i can post some pics. the only numbers on it are the casting numbers on the head and the cylinder wall. its been painted once or twice. we couldnt find any other numbers on it anywhere. the carb is a tillotson MD4A.

Try a search for overhaul info on that carb. I'm not familiar with it specifically and the typical clueless old fart on the internet.:(

Generally speaking however the vast majority of floats are set by leveling the float with the upside-down carb body.
