An operational workaround to a software limitation

I am definitely gonna have to buy a new computer in 2010 sometime. My old system still works very well for me, but I keep bumping up against Windows 2000 limitations. The latest issue has finally convinced me to start shopping.

For Christmas, my sweetie bought me a new digital camera, which doesn't have drivers for W2K, so I can't download the files directly to my machine.

But I DID figure out a workaround. I take the pictures with the new camera, then take the SD card out, put it into my old camera and then download the data from there. A bit of a PITA, but workable for now. I'll pick up a memory card reader and use that for awhile, so that I can leave my old camera in my car. Always nice to have a cam while out cruising.

Guess I'll be investigating laptops after the new year.

Always in motion is the technology... or something like that. LOL

Anyone else have similar situations and solutions?

If the problem is that you are trying to download directly to the computer via a mini USB/USB cable, there is a much easier way to solve your problem. Just go buy a Sandisk external card reader. The driver for it should work all the way back to Win 98.

Another possibility is to get on Amazon, or any number of other sites, and buy a Win XP upgrade disk. I just took a look and Amazon has them for $82.00.

Yeah, I did say in my post that I'd buy a card reader. I'm basically using my old camera as a card reader now. That's the operational workaround. LOL

Can't see me "upgrading" to XP because I'll be purchasing a new machine next year sometime. I definitely want to get a laptop, probably with Windows 7 installed.

I just rotate my old machines to other duties. Right now, my old office desktop has been converted to a multimedia machine. Its in my living room with a couple of thousand songs ripped off of my CD collection and I will soon rip DVDs into it. I'm not into the Kazaa copyright theft deal, but I have no problems with ripping CDs and DVDs that I actually own.

I also use a standard stereo tuner/amplifier for the sound, which allows me to attach an equalizer, plus watch regular TV and listen to radio, as well as taking advantage of the ripped tunes and movies.

Great time you buy. You can get really nice laptops with Win 7 for around $500. I think we'll finally be ditching the desktop this year and getting a laptop. We already have a netbook that I use 90% of the time.

I've been eyeballing those netbooks myself. The only drawback is the lack of a CD drive... at least on the ones that I saw.
