Boat is a 1985 Sea Ray Seville 5.6 open Bow 18.5 feet long. Will a 12 pound one of these anchors work to hold my boat on a lake while swimming. Info on lake is - Lake Lavon in North Texas it was at one time a meadow with lots of trees and was flooded to make a man made lake but still contains lots of trees in places. Haven't notice much of a current just more wind than anything. If this is not sufficient what would the elders of experience recommend.

Re: Anchor question

Never seen one like that in 40+ years of boating. An 8# of a different design always held my 24' boat on Lake Erie and holds my 21'er in the Atlantic. I'm going to see what can be found out about that one.

Re: Anchor question

A flat fluked Danforth has a lot of holding power and light weight. I like them with the slip ring so that if you get into something like a tree stump or rocks....riprap along the dam, you can pull over the anchor and pull it out.

A 12# Danforth with 6' of 3/8 chain on a 100' anchor rope will hold about all you will encounter in Lavon. With the bottom being mud it will take awhile for it to bite. The chain and long rope will hold you in the south end where it's deeper with the usual wind blowing. Any one of the local dealers should have them or over on Harry Hines, Marine and Industrial supply will for sure.

Re: Anchor question

The local lake up here is man made like yours with lots of trees, stumps and who knows what on the bottom. I used a mushroom style anchor on my 21 foot bow rider, it would hold the boat in place but sooner or later on a lake like that you are going to have to let one go. I currently have a Danforty style anchor on my boat, It will dig in great but you have to set it and make sure it sets properly, you can't just throw it out and expect it to hold you. On the bright side a lake does not really have a tide or current so its not like you will need a tonne of holding power. I would just throw the mushroom anchor over the side and it would hold the boat good enaough while we ate and swam for a few hours. Google "setting an anchor" if you don't know how to properly set one. There are lots of videos and right ups on it.

Re: Anchor question

I have been debating on a chain looped through a cinder block with some rope off the bow and the stern or possibly just the rope with some garden hose to protect the rope from abrasion from the block. If I loose one im out a few dollars. But I'm still looking at actual anchors.

Re: Anchor question

Has anybody else been able to find more info on the style pictured above? I have been looking daily and can really only find basic pictures but very little info that is of any help to me.

Re: Anchor question

Seems to be a good shop, I've been given their name several times in the last few days. Do you know if they do a trade in program or not. Basically I would like to borrow a 19P and a 21P to see how the boat performs with them since I fear I'm getting way too much slip from my current prop due to blade condition. have some pics up in this thread http://forums.iboats.com/prop-questions-topics/i-am-trying-replace-my-prop-need-help-611249.html#post4262069

its surprising how little a cinder block will hold! I use one for a party island type floaty in the center of the bay, and a decent wind will slide the block. This is a 20 pound inflatable!

Completely agree. An inland lake with stumps and felled trees isn't a good place for a Danfoth. The ol' fashion mushroom anchors really do well in those conditions.

Re: Anchor question

I tested the plastic anchor out on Sunday and to my surprise it seemed to hold the boat very well. Conditions were slightly choppy and good breeze. Waves moved the boat inline with the rope since I tied off to the bow and the anchor seemed to dig in. Every time we pulled the anchor it seemed the boat moved towards it instead of it coming to us.
