Anchor Shackle - mount which way?

Silly question, but better to ask right...

Is the pin on the anchor shackle supposed to go through the anchor, or the chain? And, similarly, does the pin go through the thimble on the line or the chain?

I've seen pictures both ways. My pin has to go through the chain on the anchor side because my shackle won't thread through the chain, but will thread through the anchor (FX-7)

Thanks!:)

:redface:In my experience, The bolt of the shackle fits through the shank on the fluke style anchors allowing for the use of a larger shackle. The eye of a larger shackle fits the thimble on your anchor rode.
I've seen fluke style anchors that have a ring to ride on what would normally be the shank except it's a bar bent to shape and on these the shackle seems to flop around because there is nothing to keep it oriented a particular way.:)

If you're asking about a mushroom anchor for a permanent mooring get the biggest, heaviest ground tackle.:)

Sorry, I missed the part where you asked about chain. In this case it probably depends on which way you can get the biggest shackle on.;)

Re: Anchor Shackle - mount which way?

Thanks, guys. I'll keep what I've got since it allows the use of a heavier shackle. Enjoy the summer!
