Fellas,
what style and size of anchors are you using?
I have a 15' boat and i can't get my anchor to hold no matter what. Don't know if it's the wrong shape/style, or size, or wieght.
What are you guys using?

Re: Anchor size

Re: Anchor size

Rocky bottom with a pretty steep decline. (lake not river)
Wind is usually 2 or 3 mph.
I have about 100' of rope. Anchor probably wieghs maybe 10lbs.

How deep is the water, and how much chain do you have between the anchor and the rope. (rope isn't rope when you talk anchors, its rode...)

Re: Anchor size

I'm using a 22LB Rocna with 30 ft. of 5/16th" chain and 200 ft. of 5/8" line. However that isn't really relative. What is more relative is what you are using currently for an anchor, chain and line. As said above, the type bottom, the depth, and conditions (wind, current, tide) all factor into the equation.

A rocky bottom is tough to anchor in. It's hard to get an anchor to purchase and sometimes harder to keep it from being fouled. A steep slope is difficult to anchor in as well , particulary if your anchoring in a direction so the boat is in deeper water than the anchor.

Re: Anchor size

at least in my experience, grapple type anchors work well in rocky conditions. They might slide a little bit, but will eventually find something to grab on to. Plow/danforth anchors with 2 pivoting points are almost useless, as are mushrooms.

Re: Anchor size

i think a grapple hook would work for you but if you end up doing that use two sets of ropes for it. one for anchoring with the chain on it and one on the other end of the anchor with just rope double the main rope length. the reason for the second rope is because when you are in rock and it gets stuck that one main line can get stuck but that second line will let you get it from another angle and pull it up.
