Anchor Type and Weight for my boat?

I have an 06 Searay 195 Sport. Weighs around 2800lbs dry. Figure around 20 gallons of gas, 4 or so adults, sometimes children. Carrying not a lot of gear, just water toys and jackets. I figure around 3700-4000lbs on water. I mainly boat on lakes with little if any current.

Its a mainly muddy bottom lake, with some natural rock formations and such. Ita a back flooded river, the Dam was constructed in the late '20s.

So, what type of anchor would be best, and about how heavy does it need to be?

There are many types. For anchoring, just to enjoy the day, a mushroom type will work well in mud. Something in the 15 pound range.

If you leave the boat, a Danforth would be better. Weight is not the issue with "fluke" or Danforth anchors. The most important part is the "rode" or chain attached to it. Use at least a 10' section and when you anchor use a 6 to 1 ratio. That is six feet of anchor line to one foot of water depth.

If you want the best get a Fortress FX-7. It is a 4 pound aluminum danforth type that is rated for boats to 27 feet. Diggs in faster and holds better than the steel 8 pound danforth anchor I have. It the only anchor I have used since I got it. I still carry a second 8 pound danfoth just in case it get dropped over board with out being tied on or something.

It is not the cheapest anchor but I think it is the best. They sell it here at IBoats. Check the Navy test and Power boat test if you want to see they also rated it the best.

Lots of line more important than chain unless you anchor in sharp rocks or with a short scope. My anchor has 4 feet of 1/4 Stainless steel chain and thats all.

i agree with boatist. i got me the fx7 too. works real good..... me and a buddy were raftin last season. he has a anchor like td is showing. both me and my buddy had our anchors out. don't know what happened to his as his line was all slack and he finally just pulled it in...... my fortress ended up holding both of us (2 19' boats).... we were in a slightly sheltered bay that day, but the wind was blowing pretty hard... only thing i dislike about it is it's rather wide. ya can take it apart, but ya need a wrench to do it.... i do get the fx7 stored below my back to back seats assembled though. even though it's light, it's a bit cumberson to store if ya don't take it apart...... i got 6' of chain on mine......

XYZ MP has just introduced new anchor generation ? XYZ Omega Anchor: www.xyzanchor.com

On the website, FAQ http://www.xyzanchor.com/faq.html raises new anchoring topics not heard in anchoring industry. I believe that just in a few years new anchors concepts based on proportionally huge fluke/plow will dominate the market. I also believe that future anchor generation will eliminate need for elements such as roll-bar, heavy front ballast, heavy, long bendable and dull shank. Those parts only add significant and unnecessary weight and prevent anchor from digging deep.
