Ok just bought a 22ft Center Console Bay Boat its a ProSports 22ft I am looking for a anchor to use in the shallows and the bay for saltwater fishing. Anyway theres little room on the bow to mount a large anchor winch. I use 2 MinnKota Deckhand 40s on my 24ft pontoon one may fit but I want to go the manual route. I have had intermittent issues with both deckhands on my pontoon. Anyway any recommendations that wont break the bank for a good system need i figure 150ft of rop 6ft or so of chain and a darn good anchor for the bay.

6 feet of chain is not much...

How much chain? That is a matter of how much weight you want to carry on your bow. 3/8 rope is good for your size coat, but i would go with 15 to 20 feet of chain minimum, prolly 3/16. The more chain the better. Chain keeps the angle low which is important for the anchor to set, and then be able to reset by itself in a tide shift. Scope for chain and rope is 7:1, and all chain is only 4:1. My buddies with big boats use all chain, but we can't handle that much weight up front. 6 feet of chain is of very little value, and rope only has zero chafing protection. if you go to 15 (or 20) the weight won't be bad, and you will get MUCH more value in performance.

Balance is the key. In my 28 footer I am going with 100 feet of 1/4 inch chain and 200 feet of 7/16 rope. All of my junk needs to be replaced. Grrrr

Re: Anchor winch question

BTW, your question was for a winch...or windlass...
I actually have never had a windless, but for a boat your size, and an an anchor the size you need, and in shallows liek you mention, personally I would not worry about a windless, but that would be completley up to you. Maybe I am just too cheap to shell out the $800 to $1,000 bucks for one.

Re: Anchor winch question

I agree with Dan. not necessary and likely to take up more space than justified.
