I have inherited a dusty 3hp Evinrude, model # 3706C, serial number E08268. I don't know how old it is. It hasn't been used for three years and has been stored with gas in the tank in the garage during that time.
I'm about to dust it off and go on vacation. Before I clamp the outboard onto the dinghy, what should I do to prepare the vintage engine for use?
What about oil-fuel mixture?
Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi Michael,
Your motor is a 1967 model. I'm not sure of the gas/oil ratio but I think it's 50:1. JB or someone should be able to give you that info.

I'd start with cleaning out the fuel tank and fuel line. Mix up a fresh tank of gas. If you have an old drum, I'd mount the motor to it, put enough water in the drum to cover the cavitation plate and see if it will fire up.

Since the motor has sat up for this long, The carb will probably need cleaning. I'd also replace the water pump and change the lower unit oil. A new spark plug would be a must too.

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions, Down South. Any recommendations on where to find a replacement water pump and new spark plug?

Hi Michael
All the parts needed are comman parts. Your nearest dealer probably has them in stock. You may also order them from a Napa auto parts dealer. As outboards go, yours is a spring chicken, I wouldn't consider it old enough to be a classic let alone ancient.
