The company I work for has laid off 3/4 of its work force over the last 4 years. Puts a lot of strain on us "old" guys. They keep us "old" guys because we have done everything behind us and can do it again. So now we do the work of 4 to 6 people.
Charlie F. was found face down in his keyboard this morning. Dead as a door nail. Probably a massive heart attack (as per the Medics). Hope he did not suffer or have time to worry about earthy matters.
I worked with Charlie for about 15 years. Never became close friends, but he was a well respected senior technical software developer. Our areas of software often crossed paths and I was pretty keen on seeing Charlie's name on the project list as a contact. I knew Charlie knew his stuff inside and out. When working on the same project, he was easy to talk to and get along with. Often mentioned his kids in college and others starting their family.
So that is how it goes.
Just wanted to vent my frustration at watching my coworkers die off one at a time. The joke at work is "you either die or get laid off, but no one retires".
Thanks,
Mark.
