Not only was our weekend on the boat limited to a soccer tournament with our oldest, in which they lost badly, but I also did the "wrong" thing that I consider to be a boaters "sin!" After a 2 week lay up with the boat I decided to NOT test it on the muffs in the driveway as usual and go straight from storage to the water. BAD IDEA!!! Follow this... so we went to drop it in the water, them motor fired up immediately (after carb rebuild, while still questioning my work), we went to the dock. While at the dock there was an accident between a boater trying to tie up and eventually falling into the water coming into contact with his boat and the dock (not to much blood, but alot of drama). Paramedics were called, flat board administered, then taking away (soon to find out he was okay)! Which brings me here. This is my assumption of how this has happened detailed by how it started. While the paramedics were tending to the boater, I never noticed my temperature guage was climbing FAST! I ran the boat for about 20 minutes by the dock while they were tending to him while I waited a clearing on the dock for my wife to join us. When I found a spot, she got on and we started to open waters. I simply popped the hatch to top off the drive oil bottle when I noticed ALOT of heat coming out of the hatch area. I immediately looked at the guage and it read 240 degrees without any alarm. I immediately shut it off. I waited for about an hour before starting and it read the same, then I proceedd back to the dock, 50 yards away, and made it to the dock point. We left until the motor cooled down, which took about 2-3 hours. We went back after 3 hours, stated it and ran it for about 5 minutes, to the trailer, then back home. This is where I believe it gets interesting. I did my own bellows job that turned out GREAT! But, I did go out and put on a new prop on Wednesday, in which I turned the drive to the starboard side in full trailer up position to change the prop, and left the drive in that location. This is what happened... when I left the drive in the starboard location at full trailer up, it actually PULLED the water hose and the exhaust bellows off the drive when I saw it after I pulled it out of the water. So the next series of questions are to follow. I run my trailer button when pulling out just as anyone does, but... "do you run it until it stops?", regardless of the height of the drive? When trailer up I notice ALL the bellows and the water tube are under a "stretch" strain. Is there a way to LIMIT the trailering function? I have looked in the manual and all it says is the maximum amount you want the TRIM setting at 20-3/4 inches! I believe I am OVER stretching the bellows and the water tubing. Did I do damage to the engine by running it so HOT? Is there a way to LIMIT the trailer up function? What to look for when EXAMINING damage? Thoughts!?!

The 'limit' to the trailer position is the physical limit of how far out the rams will extend. The water hose should not pull off at any or the limits of travel (UP, DOWN, port or starboard). If it does, something has been done incorrectly. Same with the exhaust bellows.

Running the engine that hot may have softened the piston rings...
