my 4cycl. mercruiser 170hp i/o is leaking anti-freeze out what looks like a little hole in the pump housing. My question is:

is that an indicator that the pump/impeller is bad?

If so I sure would appreciate any guidance on how to change it (I have the manual).

thanks!

Sounds like the seals need to be replaced. You getting any water in the oil?

The cam on this model drives the waterpump and can lead to grooves in the shaft. The double seals needs to be replaced and the shaft needs a "speedie seal" installed to keep the water from comming in.

I have never really checked the oil for water(other than on the dipstick, but I have never seen it when checking oil level).

If I understand you Trent, you are advising me to just replace seals/not the pump too?

Your correct. Replace both seals (Item #2)Look on the end of the camshaft when you remove the seals and look for "grooves" where the seals were riding on it. If grooved (which most are) you will need to install a "speedie seal" on the camshaft for a new surface for the seal to ride on.

So if there is not 10inches in front of the engine I might as well plan on taking the engine out to do this?
I have done some work on cars but I am a little intimidated by this....!

frogman2, nothing to it. The only reason you will need some space in front of the motor is to pull the generator pulley off the front. After you take off the front covers and remove pump impeller you will see nose of camshaft. As Trent said before, if there are grooves from previous seals a sleeve is made to slip over end of cam and use the same size seals. Pretty much straight forward. Remenber the 470 is an aluminum block, so be careful not to overtighten fasteners.

Chiefmike58, so you don't need to pull the cam shaft out to change the seals or put the sleeves on?

Thanks in advance for your help and everyone else's too. I am in awe of all the knowlege on this board!

I checked my motor tonight and I do not have 10" of clearance but it seems pretty straight forward.

Read and re-read the link I sent you I think it is very explanatory.

Just remember you are dealing with aluminum parts and as chiefmike58 stated do not overtighten and I would add stay away from hammers.

Bob

frogman2, no, you don't pull the cam, just slip a little sleeve over the end if it has grooves from previous seals, replace seals, put some grease in between seals and on seals, and put everything back together. Do not hammer pulley back on end of crank when reinstalling, use tool or different length bolts to pull it back into position. If you have a manual for the 470 it will give you step by step directions. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem, let me know if you did the repair yourself if so how did it go. I can change parts but when it gets to technical I loose patience. If you paid to have fixed how much did it cost? Thanks
Frank fdwengen@optonline.net

I just rebuilt a 170 a few weeks ago. The Sterndrive instructions make it sound harder than it is to remove the pump IMHO. As long as you can get a wheel puller in there to remove the balancer/alternator the rest is cake.
