I have an 89 Mercruiser 3.0L with alpha drive. After seeing a boat sink at the dock this weekend I thought I should try to find and fix my leak. I think I found it. One of the bolts with the anode on the end was loose enough to move in and out about 1/4". There is also a rust stain running down the hull under the anode.
After getting a 3/4" wrench on the nut on the inside I was able to turn it very easily. I then found the nut on the other bolt to be somewhat loose too. My question is, how tight should they be? I was luck to be able to get a wrench on it let alone a torque wrench if I had one. The manuel says transom assembly attaching screws and nuts should be 20-25 lb. ft.
I feel lucky the nut turned at all. I figured it would have been frozen in place and the transom rotted out. What are your thoughts? btw I need to tell the story of the boat that sunk this weekend sometime. I have pics.
