The anode plate holds a "sacrificial zinc anode." In short, the anode corrodes instead of your outboard, particularly in saltwater. It prevents galvanic corrosion. You should have a zinc on it, looks like a dark grayish piece of metal. If its missing or has been eaten away, you need to replace it.<br />Edit: Replace the zinc itself, not the whole bracket. The zinc bolts onto the plate. They're pretty cheap.
