First, as always, let me thank you all for the help you guys given me over the past couple years, whether you were aware or not. I have been working on a '63 Starcraft Jupiter with a '63 Merc Kiekhaefer 650 65 HP outboard, but life has a way of interrupting, so progress has been slow. It also has a way of hiding the USB charger for your camera, so the photo guys are gonna be disappointed a little longer. My humblest apologies...
My question is on the outboard. Trying to remove the lower section and the drive gears and such to see if a) the motor is even worth attempting to save, and b)pure curiousity...I've seen pictures but putting it all together with the real thing will really help my comprehension. (Usually, my motto is "If it ain't broke, gimme a minute and a bigger hammer". Anyhow, I'm stuck trying to remove the anode/trim tab. The only access to the bolt is thru a hole that may be 3/8 - 1/2 " in diameter. I know that I have mud/dirt down in the hole, and I can't quite see the head. Everything I've read says this SHOULD be a 1/4" allen head bolt, but I'm not feeling the allen wrench sliding into the recess. I've tried going up and down several sizes in the hope that maybe it's just the wrong size, I have NOT tried a metric wrench (everything so far has been SAE, as it was built BEFORE President James Earl Carter tried to get us on the metric system...blech!). I know my wrench is long enough to reach, but I don't feel like it's working. I'm seriosly considering destroying the anode/trim tab. In a just world, you'd think I could spin it off from underneath if the bolt was siezed, but I think it is set in off center, if that makes sense. I can get it to spin ~1/4 inch, but that's it. ANY help will be appreciated. I know there is supposed to be a bolt that I can only access once this piece is removed, and I THINK i can find a replacement with bolt that will work.

I'll double check the 5/16", thanks...I don't think its a socket, as even my 1/4" drive set cannot fit thru the access hole. I've tried allen, star, and the square bits...if 5/16" doesn't work, its out with the sawzall and drill bits! lol

Finally got it! Had to destroy the aluminum anode (I plan on replacing it with magnesium for fresh water), but my lower is off...now I can work on cleaning it up, replacing the water impeller, and get this thing running....

The old ones had an allen, but of course it's a mess if the socket is stripped out! In that case, I've found that drilling out the bolt works best, and many times you can save the trim tab. If the tab wasn't the greatest in the 1st place, no big loss! Slather some marine bearing grease on all the bolts/studs when you put the lower unit back together, and it'll come apart easily the next time you drop it for service. Even a steel bolt wouldn't seize in the trim tab if it's coated with something.

Cheers........ed
