when i bought my boat it was missing the anode/trim tab. i bought both but the bolt head seems to be to big to go through the hole in the top. its a sierra bolt #18-6245, i wouldnt think i should drill it bigger. is there some secret to installing this?004.jpg. also the boat leans to the left while under way so would i need to turn the tab to the left to correct?

secret to installing this?
no secret. just seperate the lower from the upper and put the cap bolt in the lower prior to installing the upper...

or

i think on my last drive someone prior to me made the hole in the upper large enough for the cap bolt to pass through it. ya can't put the little plastic button back on at the point though as the hole is to big then. the little button is cosmetic only. no ramifications from over sizing the hole or not having the button was what i found...
myself, i'd do it the proper way. separate upper and lower..

No secret, like Ziggy pointed out, you put the bolt in the hole before mating the upper to the lower. It even mentions that bolt in the service manual.

thanks! sounds easy enough

I've heard that before, then the next posts include things like:

Won't shift, oil leaking out of lower unit.

Re: anode/trim tab

Do it the right way the first time. Seperate the lower drive from the upper drive and drop the bolt through the hole and reassemble.
( now is a good time to service the water pump ) Now you are ready to put the anode tab on and snap the plastic plug in the hole on the top.
Hope this helps you out !

Just my 2 cents here but if you lose your plug or the hole has been radius-ed out. You can go to autozone and get a package of assorted body plugs. The plug does have a purpose besides just aesthetics it keeps gunk off of the bolt which you will appreciate the next time you take the lower unit down
