Ok I had a prob with my starter the other day and you all gave me lots of things to try. Well I bought a brush kit to redo it but it was the wrong kit so I said screw it and I went ahead and bought a new starter. Ok now my prob is that when the starter engages the flywheel it doesnt turn it. The battery is definately fully charged and the starter is hooked up right. I am at a complete loss here so any ideas? Any advice? thanks

Maybe try using your car battery instead of your motor for your boat. If your marine battery is over a couple years old it may not be holding a good charge. Is it a cranking battery or a deep cell?
If you use your car battery you can use jumper wires but disconnect one of the leads from the car battery to the car.

It is a brand new battery. I forgot if its cranking or deep cell. its the cheaper marine battery from walmart. they didnt have the bigger one when i needed it.

Could still be the battery. I have bought a couple of lemons. Hard to tell how long they have been sitting on the shelf. Might want to try car battery. IF that 85HP has high compression you may not be able to turn it over with a small deep cycle battery.

Well the messed up part is that for a few weeks it was fine. Ran good and only once in awhile the starter would not engage and spin. So finally last week the starter wouldnt engage at all so thats why i replaced it. This battery has started it before. Whats the chances of a starter making me need a bigger battery? If at all. thanks

does this starter have two wires or one. Did you take and scrub the contacts on wire clean. A starter requires a lot of power. If leads are corroded at all you could loose the power you need for it to start. My understanding from your post is that you can see the starter engaging but it wont turn flywheel. That rules out the solinoid. A car battery would be a sure test. Another option is to take battery to autoparts store and have them load test it. Last summer my neighboor could not start his boat with his battery. I brought mine over and it fired right up.

God forbid, but another possibility is that your motor is seized up. Have you tried turning it over with the emergency pull rope?

Make sure the battery connections are clean and that they are hooked up right(postive to positive and negative to negative).Another thing to check is to feel the battery cables near the starter while cranking to see if they get hot.You might have cables that are rotting away from the inside out.

if the power cable to the starter is getting hot, that means i need to replace it? And I dont think I have an emergency pull rope. If it goes around the flywheel like old motors did then I dont think on was in the boat when i bought it. thanks, i still got to try the car battery thing today to

If car battery dont start it you may have a siezed up motor like EBG mentioned. Any rope can be used for emergency rope. Clothsline rope or anchor rope. Just spin it around latches on top of flywheel. I believe the rotation is clockwise.

If you cant start this motor with your car battery your motor is probably siezed up. You can try starting it without plugs in it which will reduce compression and allow you to start it with the starter. You will need to pull the plugs, attach spark plug wires and ground the threads on the plugs to the chasis of the motor away from the cylinders. If you dont ground the plugs you risk a chance of frying your ignition system. Keep the spark away from the cylinders and gas so you dont start a fire. I hope the car battery works.

Re: Another 1988 85hp force prob

Hey all thanks so much for the help. I ended up taking the battery back and getting a bigger one. I had the marine starting battery and got the deep cycle trolling. It has 100 more cranking amps. Well anyway once i hooked it up the boat fired right up and ran pretty good. Hopefully if al goes well i will have it in the lake tomorrow. thanks again

Great news. Sure beats a seized up motor.
