Another 2 shift plate questions

Can the shift plate be mounted upside down if necessary? Might have to do that.
Second. The shift assist (spring loaded rod gizmo), What does it do.

You need to give us something else to go on, such as, engine/outdrive combination, year, etc., before we can answer any questions...
